Resource Spotlight: Children’s Dentistry at Hausman Village

This children’s dental practice is unique and special. It was founded by Dr. Sheila Hernandez in 2008, on faith, trust, courage and determination. Dr. Sheila, as her patients normally call her, treats each of her patients as if they were her own child. She and her team want to make you feel at home, in a family environment, providing friendly and exceptional care for babies as young as 6 months to young adults up to 21 years old.

Dr. Hernandez has been a Dentist for 39 years and received her Specialty Certificate in Pediatric Dentistry 36 years ago from the distinguished School of Dental Medicine in San Juan, Puerto Rico, USA.  Her interest in her patients is beyond dentistry; education, moral values, hygiene, etc. are topics Dr. Sheila threads into her dental treatment, conversing with mom, dad, the kids, and the family as a whole.  The doctor takes the time to assess the patient’s anatomical development and in many instances she is able detect abnormalities or irregularities such as; malocclusion, problems like high blood pressure, possible developing sleep apnea, developmental deficiencies and many other physical or mental conditions that perhaps the pediatrician has not been able to detect because the Pediatric Dentist tends to see the patients more frequently. As a medical specialist in the maxillofacial complex she then refers the child to the appropriate specialist. She does not hesitate to call the family physician or to refer the patient to another specialist to insure the patient’s medical records are inclusive of discoveries and appropriate assessments are arranged.

It takes time and compassion to attend to children with special needs. Dr. Sheila and her team makes the time and will not compromise the needs of the child for the adherence of a busy daily schedule. She has seen it all from working with marginalized children in Culebra, Puerto Rico, USA; or clinical cases at University Hospital, San Juan, Puerto Rico, USA, and  MetroHealth Hospital in, Cleveland, OH.

Special or unique cases that Dr. Hernandez treats their dentition include; autism, mentally challenged children, endocrine diseases, psychiatric disorders, cancers, developmental disorders, in summary all medical problems that children present. Pediatric Dentists are the specialist in dentistry that their training allows them to address their special oral needs and provide the best care possible.

Dr. Sheila and her very dedicated staff are integral part of the team approach to total health. Our Staff is always willing to provide the best for all who visit us. We are here to serve you and help you and your child.
